Find The Craft Beer, Wine & Spirits You Need To Enjoy The Waning Days of A Minnesota Summer!

If you don’t think that 2019 is slipping away on us, then you have not noticed that the Minnesota Vikings have started training camp and the first pre-season game is in New Orleans on August 9th…less than two weeks from now! The first University of Minnesota game is four weeks from today….and it takes place during THE STATE FAIR!!!

What we are suggesting is that our glorious Summer is slipping away from us and we all need to be taking advantage of the beautiful weather to enjoy our great outdoors. That last sentence means different things to each of us. Regardless of how you view the month of August, be it golfing, tennis, hiking, biking, boating, barbecuing, or just sitting at the edge of a body of water and chilling out…every one of these activities demands a selection of craft beer, fine wine and spirit from 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits in downtown Minneapolis!

It doesn’t matter what your beverage choice might be, wine, spirits, craft beer, even adult seltzer, we are stocked full of both old favorites as well as the most current new releases from around the world, all at competitive prices. We think our selection will amaze you while still being kind to your pocket book.

One of the great things about shopping for beer, wine and spirits in the United States is the sheer number of choices that are commonplace here, but not available in the rest of the world. Try finding a bottle of Burgundy in Italy, or a bottle of Chianti in southwest France! Forget about finding a bottle of American wine in Australia, or Germany. The same is true of good Bourbon whiskey. We recall being in a pretty good restaurant in Paris and having it pointed out that there was no vodka on the back bar.

We mention this because we see so many of our customers shopping only for the one or two products that they ALWAYS drink. You know, all over the world professional distillers, brewers and vintners dedicate their lives to producing products that TASTE GOOD! Please don’t be afraid to try new taste sensations that you haven’t had before. (In fact - keep an eye on our Events page - as we proudly host tastings where you can experience something new every weekend!) One of the most rewarding things we do is to suggest different products to our clients….and see the smiles on their faces when they return to tell us how delicious our suggestion was and how it paired perfectly with their dinner. We would love to help YOU!

So, there’s plenty of Summer left to enjoy, even if we can see the end if we squint. There are plenty of beverages at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits that you have not tried yet. Make an adventure out of the rest of your Summer and try something new while you enjoy the best weather of the year!

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Thanks for everything you do for us.

Marchesi di Gresy Martinenga Barbaresco 2015
Piedmont, Italy
94 Points Wine Advocate
This impressive wine opens to warm notes of dried cherry with camphor ash, licorice stick and balsam herb. The 2015 Barbaresco Martinenga is an articulate and complex wine that unveils new aromas with each swirl of the glass. It shows firmness and tightness at the core, a good indication of the wine's aging potential. However, what stands out most at this point in the wine's life is the ethereal and graceful nature of the bouquet. The wine is already open and generous and yet promises much more to come.
Sale $54.99/bottle
Reg. $64.99/bottle

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet 2016
South Australia
90 Points Wine Advocate
Slightly herbal and leafy on the nose, the deep, currant-scented 2016 Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon blends fruit from five different regions of South Australia. It's medium to full-bodied, with soft, measured tannins and true Cabernet identity. Aged in French and American oak, there are some cedar and mocha notes apparent on the nose and finish, but the cassis fruit carries the day.
Sale $64.99/bottle
Reg. $74.99/bottle

Dom Perignon 2008
Champagne, France
96 Points Wine Spectator
There's power to this graceful Champagne, with the vivid acidity swathed in a fine, creamy mousse and flavors of toasted brioche, kumquat, pastry cream, candied ginger and poached plum that dance across the palate. An underpinning of smoky mineral gains momentum on the lasting finish.

Whether or not you were lucky enough to attend our Bastille Day tasting on Sunday, you are in luck today, as two of this week’s wine specials hail from the French region.

See our full list below – and we hope to see you in our downtown Minneapolis store soon!

Domaine Amido Cotes du Rhone 2018
Rhone, France
Domaine Amido has just over five hectares of vines in the village of Signargues, about half a dozen kilometers south of Tavel. The soil resembles that of Lirac, with galets roulets and clay, and the vineyards have a southern exposure. The wine is made with 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, and aged in tank. It is forward and fruity, yet with and underlying seriousness that helps it to resemble the more expensive Lirac.
Sale $12.99/bottle
Reg. $14.99/bottle

Bonny Doon Vin Gris 2018
Central Coast, California
In the realm of Vin Gris/Rosé wines, the Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare is one of the most iconic in the history of California. While there are others in the same grouping, this is the wine that had captured wine lovers' palate. The 2018 vintage is an excellent wine. This wine is light in color, mysterious in flavors, and crisp in the finish. Its aromas and flavors of dried fruit, earthly dust are beautifully persistent.
Sale $15.99/bottle
Reg. $17.99/bottle

Cantine del Notaio L'Atto 2014
Campania, Italy
90 Points, Vinous

Deep ruby-red. Rich red cherry, botanical herbs and sweet spices on the enticing nose. Enters sweet and round, then turns herbal; strong notes of quinine and underbrush complement ripe red cherry fruit flavors. Finishes very pure and long. Made from 100 percent Aglianico.

Reg. $24.99/bottle

Saracco Moscato d'Asti 2018
Piedmont, Italy
94 Points, Vinous
Luminous pale straw-green with golden tinges. Captivating aromas of orange blossom, lemon verbena, vanilla, sage and ripe grapefruit nectar. Dense, juicy and suave, presenting a multilayered, complex set of flavors similar to the aromas. The finish is very long, resonating with a floral topnote and delightful vibrancy. Outstanding, concentrated, complex and very pure Moscato d'Asti.
Sale $13.99/bottle
Reg. $19.99/bottle

Darnaud Mis en Bouche Crozes Hermitage 2017
Rhone, France
90 Points, Wine Advocate
Thirty percent of the entry-level 2017 Crozes Hermitage Mis en Bouche spent time in wood, but the emphasis here is on the fruit—and immediate accessibility. Brambly notes accent fresh cherries in this silky-textured, medium-bodied Syrah. It's a great quaffing wine, just so easy to drink, with delicate tannins and a bright finish.
Sale $24.99/bottle
Reg. $26.99/bottle

Sale $19.99/bottle
Reg. $27.99/bottle

Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo 2016
Piedmont, Italy
91+ Points Wine Advocate
The 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo was bottled last September and is almost sold out at this point. The next vintage, 2017, will be bottled this upcoming September. Because Produttori del Barbaresco makes its Langhe Nebbiolo with declassified Barbaresco fruit, you see less of this wine in the good vintages and more of the wine in the difficult years (in which not all fruit meets the higher Barbaresco standards and is better sold at the more affordable Langhe Nebbiolo price tag instead). For example, 80,000 bottles were produced in 2016 compared to 120,000 in 2014. That said, Langhe Nebbiolo is quickly becoming its own wine with its own distinct identity and consumer. This is an elegant and silky expression with long flavors of dark fruit, tar, smoke and toasted clove. Best of all: it is a terrific value buy. Too bad not much is left.
Sale $24.99/bottle
Reg. $27.99/bottle

BV Rutherford Cabernet 2015
Napa Valley, California
90 Points Vinous
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford is plush, sensual and inviting, all of which make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Hints of cedar, tobacco, menthol, chocolate and licorice add aromatic nuance to a core of fleshy dark fruit. Drink it over the next decade or so.
Sale $29.99/bottle
Reg. $39.99/bottle

Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc 2018
Marlborough, New Zealand
92 Points Wine Spectator
A vibrant mix of pineapple, mango and citrus flavors on a smooth, medium body, with plenty of vibrant acidity. Appealing details of orange zest and green apple skin add complexity.
Sale $19.99/bottle
Reg. $23.99/bottle

Please join us to sample and perhaps purchase some really memorable products.

From 4th of July Fireworks to Bastille Day Tastings: Visit 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits in Downtown Minneapolis This July!

Time seems to fly by faster the older you get. I just realized that 2019 is just about half over, and for the life of me, I can’t figure out where the time went...

Anyway, next Thursday is Independence Day. For those of you who are not leaving town for “the cabin” or “the lake” over the long July 4th weekend, let us remind you that most of the best places to watch the fireworks in downtown Minneapolis are VERY close to 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits. Gold Medal Park, the Stone Arch Bridge, the whole river front, and of course, the rooftops of just about every apartment building/condominium are wonderful spots to enjoy that most traditional of July 4th traditions, saying ,”OOOOOH and AHHH!” after each explosion in the night air.

Remember, this is thirsty work!! It is hopefully going to be warm next Thursday night and possibly humid. You are going to want to stay hydrated with your favorite beverage. 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits not only has an impeccably curated selection of wines, spirits and craft beer from which to choose (many of which you can taste in our store each weekend!), but we will be open on July 4th from 8 AM until 10 PM…just as the fireworks start! We spend a lot of time on the telephone on July 4th telling people that we are open til 10 PM….now YOU are in the know, so save the phone call, and come see us instead.

Please mark your calendar for Sunday, July 14th to join us for our first (annual if you make it so) Bastille Day French Wine Tasting. We aren’t going to feature wines from every district of France, but we will be showing seven very good, AFFORDABLE wines from Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Provence and Languedoc. The wines are going to be delicious, and you folks make the best company…as well as making the event exciting.

The year may be half over, but the fun is just beginning at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits! Don, Rob, Darren and Cory are constantly on the lookout for what is newest and best in adult beverages, as can be seen by the explosion of hard seltzers and ciders of every flavor that are new to the store, as well as a continuing string of terrific wines that Don has managed to negotiate wonderful low prices. If we aren’t already your go to store for beverage alcohol, we are striving to become just that!

Thank you for your business. Thank you for your trust. Thank you for your friendship and advice and counsel. Thank you for reading this!

Great Sale Wine To Wrap Up June!

Can we really be this close to the 4th of July? You could blame it on the late start to the season, but really, when has the 4th of July ever felt as though it arrived right on time?

If you feel the need to ponder these questions, we highly encourage you to do so while enjoying a nice glass of wine – preferably from this week’s sale wine – listed below!

Check out this week’s selections – and we hope to see you in our downtown Minneapolis store soon.

Remember to keep up with our Events page to be among the first to know what we’ll be serving during our in-store wine tastings every weekend!

Gerard Bertrand Saint Chinian 2011
Languedoc, France
The complex aromas of black olives and blackberry come from the carefully controlled extraction performed during vinification. Its full, fat body on the palate lends it a remarkable elegance. The long-lasting rich, fleshy bouquet reveals notes of roasted coffee, blackcurrant and prunes.
Sale $11.99/bottle
Reg. $22.99/bottle

Sainte Leocadie Minervois Rouge 2016
Languedoc, France
This delicious bistro red is made by partial carbonic macerartion and traditional stomping of the grapes. Aromas of dried thyme and lavender are prevalent, adding complexity to the juicy plum, cherry and wild raspberry flavors. Creamy but firm, with gripping tannins and a cocoa-dusted finish. This is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Carignan.
Sale $10.99/bottle
Reg. $12.99/bottle

Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup Rose 2018
Languedoc, France
Deeply vinous, yet immensely refreshing, it delivers the brambly garrigue and earthy, peppery spice from the brush-covered bluffs of the top grape-growing area in the Languedoc, plus a juicy burst of wild strawberry and lingering salinity that inspire sip after sip.
Sale $15.99/bottle
Reg. $17.99/bottle

Vajra Rosato 2018
Piedmont, Italy
90 Points Vinous
Bright pink. Intense, mineral-accented aromas of red berries and fresh flowers, with a herbal undertone. Classically dry and vibrant rose that closes long and crisp, with nicely persistent notes of herbs and red fruit.
Sale $17.99/bottle
Reg. $19.99/bottle

Bodega Norton Malbec D.O.C. 2015
Mendoza, Argentina
92 Points Wine Spectator
This refined and powerful red features concentrated red plum, raspberry and boysenberry flavors. Offers lilting spiciness midpalate, with a finish that features licorice and dried ginger accents.
Sale $14.99/bottle
Reg. $17.99/bottle

Hofer Gruner Veltliner Liter 2017
Weinviertel, Austria
The 2017 vintage for Gruner Veltliner in Austria was excellent, so we have to imagine that this always consistently delicious liter bottle offering from H & M Hofer will be among the best they've ever made. Lemon lime citrus with a slightly spritzy pizazz, it'a almost as fun to open as it is to drink. The Hofer family farm their 20 hectare estate organically in the small village of Auersthal, on the northern edge of Vienna's suburbs. Inexpensive liter bottles of Gruner Veltliner abound but they are rarely this good and made with such care and attention.
Sale $18.99/Liter
Reg. $22.99/Liter

Hofer Zweigelt Liter 2017
Weinviertel, Austria
The most popular red wine in Austria, Zweigelt is to Austria perhaps what Dornfelder is to Germany and Beaujolais is to France--an all-purpose workhorse that is as at home with a roasted chicken as it is with a hamburger. The 2017 has a cool-weather character, lean and high-toned, with freshness to spare. The perfect zippy red that can take a chill for summer picnics.
Sale $17.99/Liter
Reg. $21.99/Liter

Heidi Schrock Gelber Muskateller 2017
Burgenland, Austria
This 2017 Muskateller has a mere (and welcome) 12.5% alc and a little “natural wine” flavor; it’s juicy, leesy and dry, more the linden and chamomile aspects of Muscat and less of the orange blossom. It actually tastes more like Savignin than like Muscat, fluffy and sort of tightly rich, like bright colors on an overcast day; intense fennel and physalis. Soulful, original, and please don’t drink it too cold. -notes from Importer Terry Theise.
Sale $22.99/bottle
Reg. $25.99/bottle

Arcanum Il Fauno di Arcanum 2015
Tuscany, Italy
93 Points Wine Advocate
The 2015 Il Fauno di Arcanum is a robust and thickly layered blend of 59% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. This wine offers terrific value, especially to those who prize soft richness and concentration in their blended Tuscan reds. This beautiful, medium to full-bodied wine would pair seamlessly with grilled or roasted meats. The warmth and sheer exuberance of the vintage will put a big smile on your face.
Sale $24.99/bottle
Reg. $34.99/bottle

On the palate the impression is fresh and full, with great aromatic persistence and balance.

Celebrate June With Some Great Wine & Spirits!

June is bustin’ out all over! There are so many great things going on throughout Minnesota the next couple of weeks that I don’t even know where to begin. We CAN tell you that just about everything calls for celebration and a visit to 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits in downtown Minneapolis …to make sure that you are properly hydrated as well as in a mellow good mood.

The league leading Minnesota Twins are in town for a nine game homestand. Just being able to say ”league leading” at this juncture of the season calls for a celebratory cocktail or glass of champagne (only if you don’t believe in jinxing the team, of course.)

Tomorrow is Flag Day, so you might think about a red, white and blue themed barbecue or picnic.

Sunday kicks off Pride Week in the Twin Cities. There is a “Family Fun Day” in St. Paul this Sunday, and of course, the BIG parade in Minneapolis next Sunday. The whole week is a celebration of….how far we have all come, and giving thanks that we finally have!

Speaking of liberation, Wednesday June 19th is “Juneteenth”…the traditional celebration of Black Liberation in America. We are, coincidentally, hosting a terrific tasting of the wines of La Rioja Alta. OK, OK…they don’t have much to do with each other, except for timing.

If, however, you are interested in tasting and learning more about some of the best wines in the World (not just Spain), then you will want to contact us either at info@1010wws.com or by phone at (612)339-4040 to make your reservation for this event. As usual, the tasting begins at 6:30 PM and the cost of a ticket is $25.00, which we will refund against any purchase of La Rioja Alta wines you might make at the tasting.

We are planning on breaking with habit regarding Sunday tastings at the store. Sunday, July 14th is the 230th Anniversary of the storming of the Bastille and the beginning of the French Revolution. Bastille Day is to France what July 4th is to Americans. The French commitment to wines of quality is well more than 230 years old. For a variety of reasons, the French example is the standard by which so many wines are judged even today. In the spirit of French independence from monarchy and in honor of the quality of French wines, we thought we would do a Bastille Day tasting, from 2:00 to 4:30.

The problem with doing a tasting in honor of France is that....well...we limit our tastings to six wines. We have to include a Champagne, so we picked Laurent-Perrier La Cuvee. We include Chateau Latour-Martillac Blanc because we think White Bordeaux wines are under appreciated. Chateau LaRose Trintaudon Haut-Medoc because it has always been a Bordeaux favorite. Gerard Bertrand Cigalus Blanc because the South of France produces so much wine...and this one is stunning. We thought the Domaine Rene LeClerc Bourgogne Rouge was terrific...and affordable. Last but not least, we would never have heard the end of it from my daughter Ann if we had not included Fleurs de Prairie Rose'.

We apologize for not including so many wines from so many important regions....but that is France....and that is why we love its wines!

Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages 2014
Sonoma County, California
95 Points Vinous
The flagship Cinq Cepages is terrific in 2014. Rich, ample and unctuous, the 2014 offers all the richness that is such a signature of this bottling, but with better integration of tannin and finer balance than I can remember seeing in some time. Blackberry jam, grilled herbs, smoke, menthol, lavender and sweet spice all meld together effortlessly. Opulent and dense on the palate, yet not at all overdone, the 2014 is fabulous.

Pure, rich, dense and driven by extracted blackberry, boysenberry, licorice, currant, cedar and cigar box nuances. Most impressive for the direct and authoritative presence.
