1010 Washington Wine & Spirits Is Here to Fill Downtown Minneapolis’ Summer Sippin’ Needs!

Memorial Day is in the rearview mirror (and what a washout THAT was!), so it must be Summertime in Downtown Minneapolis. Bunches of our customers seem to be pinching themselves to make sure that the dream season the Twins are enjoying isn’t just that…a dream. The Gopher softball team really is living a dream. Think of it…the College World Series for the first time EVER! Go Gophers!

At 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits we continue to be optimistic about Summer, 2019. We are going to get our fill of barbecuing, boating, camping, golf, tennis and picnics. Starting today warm weather is bound to stay soon. We are going to need to stock up on craft beer, wine and spirits for all the fun outdoor events that define Summer in Minnesota.

In that spirit of optimism, we have done our part. The store is fully stocked with both old standards, as well as the cutting edge of exciting new products. What is going on today in the Craft Beer business is…beyond amazing. Darren and Cory, our two craft beer specialists, bring invaluable knowledge of this new business to our store every day. They are truly invaluable assets to our business! If you are the least bit interested in the myriad of new types and flavor combinations that have burst upon the malt beverage scene recently, then there is no greater source of information than our two craft beer specialists. Take advantage of them, the only thing they like better than talking about all the new trends in beer is to be tasting them! They will steer you to all manner of new taste sensations that will be both fun and flavorful.

The truth be known, the best compliment, the biggest rush for any of us at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits is when YOU come back and tell us how the product we suggested was just perfect for your event. The fact that you relied on our judgement and it worked for you is just so gratifying. It happens all the time, but it never gets old. Thank you!

The sheer volume of beverages that are available for sale today can be overwhelming for any consumer. Our promise to you is that one or more of us has tasted almost every single item in the store before we placed it. When it comes to vintage wines, we taste them every year. This may be overkill, but you are entitled to know that when you make a purchase in our store, the product has passed muster with US before we offer it to you. Our goal is that you feel that you don’t have to know too much about wines, spirits and beers because you rely on us! Our business is built on establishing that trust with you, our valuable customers.

So, thank you for trusting us. Thank you for your business. Thank you for your friendship and advice. Thanks for reading this!

Late May Wine Sale!

Did you feel summer finally arrive this past weekend? It certainly looked like summer from the view of our downtown Minneapolis storefront, even with the Memorial Day rain!

As we prepare to move fully into summer, by moving fully into June, we need to take care of one last bit of spring business by sharing the wine specials we have for you to close out May.

See our list of sale wine below – and remember to check-out our Events page to learn more about our weekly craft beer, wine and spirits tastings.

Castano Monastrell 2016
Yecla, Spain
90 Points Wine Advocate

I hadn't encountered their entry-level, young and unoaked Monastrell for a while, but I tasted the 2016 Monastrell, which fermented in stainless steel and was kept in concrete vats for four to six months. They used some 25% to 30% full clusters in the vinification, and I've never smelled anything like this from Castaño. This is floral and fresh, elegant and balanced, with moderate extraction, ripe tannins and a very pleasant mouthfeel with clean, focused flavors. This is almost too serious for the price. Wow! In the future, they might do some full clusters; I tasted an experimental lot with 100% full clusters in 2016, and the wine was amazing.
Sale $7.99/bottle
Reg. $11.99/bottle

Domaine du Vissoux Chremette Saint-Amour 2017
Burgundy, France
92+ Points Wine Advocate
The 2017 Saint-Amour Les Champs-Grilles is a very promising young wine, unfurling in the glass with notes of rose hip, sweet red cherries and orange rind. On the palate, its medium-bodied, fine-boned and stony, with good concentration and bright acids.
$29.99/bottle

Domaine Prebende Beaujolais 2017
Burgundy, France
91 Points James Suckling
Impressive depth of rich raspberries and cherries here with a wealth of gently grainy tannins. Drink or hold.
Sale $14.99/bottle
Reg. $16.99/bottle

De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay 2018
Robertson, South Africa
92 Points Wine Spectator
A flash of matchstick gives way quickly to a bright core of green and yellow apple flavors laced liberally with honeysuckle and verbena notes through the nicely detailed finish. Very, very solid. Drink now through 2021.
Sale $17.99/bottle
Reg. $19.99/bottle

Idlewild Flora & Fauna Red Wine 2018
California
Dark cherry, fresh soil, dried herbs, violets, and graphite are highlights of the aromas. The mouth feel is a joyful interplay of brightness with just enough chewy bass notes before the seriousness kicks in with a firm acid and tannin balance on the finish.
Sale $21.99/bottle
Reg. $26.99/bottle

Tenuta di Arceno Chianti Classico Riserva 2015
Tuscany, Italy
94 Points Wine Advocate
Warm aromas of dark fruit, potting soil and moist chewing tobacco rise from the bouquet of the 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva. This is an extremely territory-driven wine that emits aromas that recall the red clay soils and warm summer breezes of the Castelnuovo Berardenga area to the southern side of the Chianti Classico appellation. This is a soft and enriched red wine (made with 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) that produces sweet textural richness and plenty of ripe fruit packed within that generous fiber.
Sale $24.99/bottle
Reg. $34.99/bottle

Turley Old Vine Zinfandel 2016
Napa Valley, California
91 Points Wine Advocate
One of Turley's emblematic bottlings, the 2016 Zinfandel Old Vines exhibits a lovely bouquet of raspberries, plums, cherries and licorice. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with rich structuring tannins, a generous core of fleshy fruit and a long, flavorful finish.
Sale $29.99/bottle
Reg. $34.99/bottle

White Rose Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2015
Willamette Valley, Oregon
92 Points Vinous

Light ruby-red. Deeply perfumed aromas of fresh dark fruits, incense and Asian spices pick up a minerally element with aeration. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering sappy blackberry, cola and violet pastille flavors that show very good focus and spicy lift. Conveys a suave mix of power and finesse and finishes very long and smoky, with a hint of vanilla and silky tannins lending shape and grip.
Sale $34.99/bottle
Reg. $39.99/bottle

Memorial Day in downtown Minneapolis means a 3-day weekend and holiday get-togethers. And if you are like us, you’ll need some great wine at these get-togethers, alongside the craft beer and Bootlegs, to serve when most of the party has left and only a few trusted friends remain!

Here, then, are some great wines we pulled from the cellar – any of which would fit nicely into your Memorial Day party plans:

Roederer Estate L'Ermitage 2012
Anderson Valley, California
95 Points Wine Spectator
Extravagant, yet balanced and refined, with lush, crisp brioche, fresh ginger and spice, roasted hazelnut and Asian pear flavors that fan out on the lengthy finish.

Elk Cove Mount Richmond Pinot Noir 2016
Willamette Valley, Oregon
92+ Points Wine Advocate
The 2016 Pinot Noir Mount Richmond is pale to medium ruby-purple in color with a lovely open nose of black cherry preserves, blueberry compote and boysenberry with notions of floral perfume, tilled soil and dried leaves. Light to medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with warm black fruits and layers of baking spice and earth, with a good frame of fine-grained tannins and great freshness, finishing very long and spicy.
Sale $49.99/bottle
Reg. $59.99/bottle

Turley Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel 2017
Napa Valley, California
92 Points Wine Advocate
Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, it opens with warm peach preserves, cinnamon stick and dried leaves hints with dried red and black cherries and notes of dried flowers. Medium-bodied, it gives pretty layers of dried fruits, flowers and spices in the mouth, with juicy acidity tethered by firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing very long and spicy.
Sale $44.99/bottle
Reg. $49.99/bottle

Fattoria la Massa Giorgio Primo 2013
Tuscany, Italy
97 Points Wine Advocate
This standout wine brings Fattoria la Massa to a new level of accomplishment and opens an exciting new chapter of possibility. The 2013 Giorgio Primo (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) is dark and impenetrable on first impact. The aromas accelerate slowly and grow evenly in power and intensity after a few quick swirls of the glass. The bouquet peels back with dark fruit aromas, baking spice and Mediterranean herb. The effect is seamless and smooth. A velvety texture is accented by full-bodied richness and just enough freshness to keep the palate energized. And, of course, this is just the beginning of a long cellar life.
$99.99/bottle

Bootlegs Are This Year’s Summer Cocktail in Minneapolis!

Wow! We are more than halfway through the month of May. Memorial Day is a week from today….and then….its SUMMERTIME in downtown Minneapolis!!!!

You know what that means, don’t you? Summertime means cold beer, rose’ and white wine, except when you are grilling a steak or a couple of racks of ribs and you need a big red wine to complement your meal. Summertime means cocktails outdoors and if you are a true blue Minnesotan, it might mean a Bootleg!

What is a Bootleg you ask?

A Bootleg is all about limeade, lemonade, mint, club soda, garnish, a lot of ice in a tall glass….and, of course, your favorite spirit (usually vodka?). A Bootleg is not impossible to make, but a good one takes talent.

Apparently, nobody outside of Minnesota had ever HEARD of a Bootleg. That is just another reason to be proud of being a native!!

Digression: We believe in premixed cocktails. Whether we are talking about Manhattans from High West or Jefferson, or Old Fashioneds from Dashfire or Crooked Water…you cannot make a cocktail at home from scratch as well as these folks make them at the distillery. The proportions are always consistent…AND the distillers, in many cases, barrel age the ingredients together so that the flavors are truly integrated and the cocktails are…..PERFECT!!

We are telling you this because we just brought in a premixed Bootleg from Tattersall, our closest local distillery. Can you tell that we LOVE Bootlegs?? A 750ml Tattersall Bootleg is on special at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits for $26.99. The only experiment you have to make is how much soda to add for the perfect, Minnesota born, refresher.

Other than that, we are just so excited that Summer is upon us, and of course that the Twins are in first place in their division. We hope you are, as well, and we really hope that you will include us at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits and allow us to help you plan your Summer activities with all the best things to drink…including Bootlegs.

Finally, before the Memorial Day anticipation gets too heady, we had better remind you to visit us this weekend for one last craft beer, wine and spirits tasting - before we get to June.

Thanks for everything you do for us. Thanks for reading this!

Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino 2013
Tuscany, Italy
94 Points Vinous

Luminous medium-dark red. The captivating nose combines sour red cherry, violet, coconut, tobacco, minerals and a hint of white pepper. Densely packed and youthful but very fresh and lively; this already boasts a silky texture and considerable early appeal owing to its noteworthy sweetness of fruit. Subtle notes of red berries, herbs, graphite and flowers carry through into the rising, very long, vibrant finish. A knockout Brunello that further confirms winemaker Cecilia Leoneschi’s talent at making exceptionally good, very classic Brunellos. Well done.
$59.99/bottle

Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino 2013
Tuscany, Italy
94 Points Wine Advocate

I never have enough praise for the excellent work achieved at Uccelliera. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is another proud notch in Andrea Cortonesi's belt. This is a fine and elegant wine that wraps smoothly over the palate. It also has an immediate and accessible personality that means you don't need to wait too long to enjoy it. The wine is redolent of dark fruit, spice, balsam herb, licorice and pressed flowers. You get loads of variety character.

Get the Fine Wine & Craft Spirits You Need To (Finally) Celebrate the Warm Weather!

Who, besides all of us at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits in downtown Minneapolis, is yearning for some warm weather??  Come on!! It is May already!  Baseball season is already a month old (Go Twins!) but I haven’t been on the golf course yet, unfortunately.  It seems grossly unfair.

Everyone says we should trust in the fact that warm weather is right around the corner….and we certainly hope so because the Fourth Annual Best Indoor Rose’ tasting is NEXT Saturday…May 11th …from 4PM til 7PM at the store.  This is your best opportunity to taste all of the newly released 2018 vintage Rose’ wines from around the world in one spot.  Well, you cannot taste them ALL, but there will be A LOT of wines being tasted.  Some of these are the new vintage of old favorites, but others are going to be brand new to the store this year.  Given the number of wines you are going to want to try, we suggest that you plan to arrive early and stay late.  There will be plenty of spit buckets available to those of you who want to stay sober and keep your palates sharp.  Given the seasonal nature of rose’ shipments to our suppliers, you might want to take a position on the wines you like next Saturday to insure continuity of supply over the Summer season.

Right on the heels of our Rose’ Tasting, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12th.  Depending on Mom’s taste in beverages, you are going to want to make sure that you have an assortment of drinks to celebrate your affection for the woman who carried you for nine months, taught you how to use a spoon, and lavished total love upon you from your birth to this very moment.

Going back to our first sentence, if the weather gets decent by Mother’s Day, you may want to select a refreshing white or pink wine, or even something sparkling for a Springtime celebration with Mom.  If not, well, there is always Bourbon Whisky!

Speaking of Bourbon….did we forget to mention the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 4th at 5:30 PM?  We did!  For shame on us.  This is America’s premier horse race.  Lots of us have parties to attend to watch the Derby.  The signature drink of the Kentucky Derby is the Mint Julep, but either a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned is an acceptable alternative.  Whichever cocktail you choose as the drink of choice for YOUR Derby party, you will want to consult with our staff for just the right Bourbon whisky.  We still have a very limited quantity of our own personal single barrel selection from Buffalo Trace, but have a good supply of the Old Forester and; for the strong of heart, Barrell.

As usual, there are lots of reasons to shop at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits….and I didn’t even mention that Memorial Day Weekend is just around the corner!  Thank you so much for your past business.  Thank you for being our friends and neighbors.  As always, thank you for reading this.

Win A Basket of Craft Beer & Spirits at City Pages 40th Birthday Party!

Tomorrow night, April 26th, we are proud to help sponsor City Pages’ 40th Birthday Disco Bash, happening at First Avenue, just a short jaunt from our downtown Minneapolis store.

When you are there, be sure to stop by City Pages’ booth where you can register to win a basket full of craft beer and spirits from 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits.

While we are still building the basket as we speak, we can assure you that it will contain selections from both William Grant & Sons, distillers of Hendricks Gin, and 56 Brewing, who recently partnered with City Pages on Press Check, a sour IPA brewed to celebrate City Pages’ 40th Birthday. Our own craft beer expert Darren refers to this beer as, ‘phenomenal.’ We’ll have some in the store soon!

The party starts at 8pm at First Avenue and 70’s attire is definitely encouraged. We hope you are able to make it out – and remember that you have plenty of time to stop by 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits first to kick off your night by tasting some great wines!

Our Spring Wine, Craft Beer & Spirits Sale Ends Easter Sunday!

This is a VERY special weekend! Passover, which begins tomorrow night, is the only holiday we know of in any religion that celebrates that most precious gift of freedom. Today is also Good Friday followed closely by Easter Sunday. Of course, the two holidays are inexorably connected, but the Resurrection is the most important celebration in Christendom. So we wish everyone a blessed and happy holiday.

You would think less of us if we didn’t mention that both of these holidays are occasions that call for several bottles of wine from 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits to enhance your celebration brunch or dinner. You are going to need lots of wine this weekend! Coincidentally, our Spring Sale goes through the close of business on Easter Sunday… From fine wine and top notch spirits, to perhaps the best selection of craft beer in downtown Minneapolis, all may be found at our best prices of the year, right when YOU might need them most! We are pretty certain that the wines we will taste in the store this weekend are going to be geared to compliment your holiday dinner, so….come see us!! Please.

I am surprised to find that we still have a few spots open for the Ridge Vineyards wine tasting on May 1st. Space at this tasting is limited because the Aloft has another event scheduled, so we cannot open up to a larger room. I know that many of you wait to reserve your spot to the last minute, and I fear we may have to disappoint some who procrastinate. This is going to be a great evening of iconic California wines. Call the store at (612) 339-4040 or drop us an email at info@1010wws.com to reserve your place for Wednesday, May 1 at 6:30 PM.

There is no reservation required for our Fourth Annual Best Indoor Rose’ Tasting which will take place Saturday, May 11th from 4PM to 7PM. This is everyone’s best opportunity to taste the full range of Rose’ wines from the 2018 vintage at one time, in one place….just in time for Summer enjoyment. You won't want to miss this annual event this year!

I want to take a moment to wish Adam Polzin the best of luck as he pursues his wanderlust. Adam has a bucket list that is far longer than his arm, and he is leaving us to pursue yet another adventure in Alaska. Those of you who have worked with Adam these past months have been taken by his passion and commitment to fine wine. He has been an asset to the store. We thank him for the time he has given us.

It looks like Spring has finally sprung. We look forward to a great late Spring and Summer with you. Thank you for your friendship and counsel. Thank you for your custom. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Before you go, take a look at the tastings we will be offering this weekend!

April 2019 Craft Beer of the Month: Bell's Brewing

Bell's Brewing - April Beer of the Month at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits.jpg

The last time we shared a post highlighting our Beer of the Month, we indicated how lucky we were to narrowly miss a March Snowmageddon. And the last time we shared a post with a Michigan connection, Michigan State players and fans ended up leaving downtown Minneapolis earlier than anticipated.

With that out of the way, we are proud to highlight Michigan’s own Bell’s Brewing as our April craft beer of the month! If you are a fan of either Michigan State – or of actual spring – we hope you stop by this week and stock up on enough to numb your sorrows. With our Spring Sale in full swing, regardless of what we see in the weather forecast, it’ll be easy enough to do so!

See below our full list of craft beer specials from Bell’s Brewing, and more of your favorite craft breweries, available throughout April.

Remember to follow our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to find out exactly when we get new beers in.

If You Are Still Here For The Final Four, 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits Is Still Here For You!

While we say good-bye, probably, to fans of Auburn and Michigan State, we are happy to welcome fans for Virginia and Texas Tech for another day at least!

We also know that if you are still in town, there is a good chance that you are racing from one destination to another, glancing at your phone the entire way.

So in the interest of both ensuring you find more of what we have to offer, and that you stay safe while on the go, we’ll keep this post short and to the point.

Through the rest of your visit, we will be hosting our Annual Spring Sale at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits in downtown Minneapolis, right next to US Bank Stadium!

See what we have to offer in the full list below:

 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits - 2019 Spring Sale!

If we do not see you again after today, thank you for visiting!

Our Spring Craft Beer, Wine & Spirits Sale Is The Most Exciting Event In Downtown Minneapolis This Weekend!

It seems like people have been talking about “The Final Four” for at least the past three years. Well, today is the day! We are told that 90,000 people are coming to the Twin Cities this weekend to watch the best four teams in college basketball duke it out (sorry, I couldn’t resist!) for the national championship.

All of those visitors are NOT going to come to 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits this weekend! If you are receiving this newsletter, then YOU are our best customers. Please don’t let the anticipated hoards of basketball fans chase you out of downtown Minneapolis or away from what we hope is your favorite craft beer, fine wine and spirits outlet. You’re not just our best customers, you are our friends and neighbors…and we look forward to seeing you.

If you skip town this weekend, not only will we miss you, but you will miss the beginning of our Spring Sale, which started yesterday and runs through Sunday, April 21st!

When you walk into the store this week, you will be met with a sea of pink sale signs. Don, Rob, Darren and Cory have been working really hard to bring you the best deals of the year right now just in time for your Easter dinner on April 21st or your Passover Seders April 19 and 20. The weather seems to finally be cooperating and you will want to stock up for Spring parties, picnics and outings. Do it now, when the prices are at their best!

We want to remind you that the Ridge Vineyards Tasting is May 1st at 6:30 PM at the Aloft Hotel. Ridge was founded in 1962, which makes it one of the oldest post Prohibition wineries in California. The winery is terroir driven, and you will have the opportunity to see the differences that each single vineyard impart to the iconic Ridge Zinfandels that we will be tasting that night. Additionally, we will be tasting Chardonnay and Cabernet from this important winery. It is going to be a terrific tasting, and we would like to see you there. Call the store at (612)339-4040 or send us a note at info@1010wws.com to reserve your spot.

There are no reservations necessary for our Fourth Annual Best Indoor Rose’ Tasting taking place on Saturday, May 11th from 4PM til 7PM. That may or may not be enough time to sample from the over forty rose’ wines from the 2018 vintage that will be available. This has always been one of the best events we have inside the store. It is a great opportunity to sample, and purchase the wines of Summer when they are not only fresh, but AVAILABLE. So many of these wines are shipped into the market in the Spring and not reordered by our suppliers. When you find something you like, jump on it to avoid future disappointment.

As usual, there is a lot going on at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits! We want you to think of us as YOUR store. We love seeing you. We love suggesting new and different beverages for your enjoyment. You are our reason for being here.

Thanks for reading this!

Surly Barrel Aged Darkness is Here!

As if today was not already exciting enough, what with the start of our Annual Spring Wine Sale, we have yet another big announcement to make.

Surly Barrel Aged Darkness Now At 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits.jpg

In our downtown Minneapolis store now, we have a limited number of bottles of 2019 Surly Barrel Aged Darkness!

If you are already among the initiated, you are probably well aware of what you will taste in this intense – and intensely sought after - brew. For those that are not yet among the faithful, we invite you to familiarize yourself with the description provided by Surly below:

“Darkness is a beer of fable and legend. Malty and intense, yet velvety smooth. This special edition of our massive Russian imperial stout matured in rye whiskey barrels and brings waves of chocolate, vanilla, dried fruit, and cherry flavors, enhanced by the oak and spice of the barrel.”

Surly special releases always go quick – but this one will be flying off the shelves.

Along with the launch of our Spring Wine Sale, what more reason do you need to stop by on your way home this evening?
